Did you know...

Pottery used outside needs to be fired at or above 1200° to be able to withstand freeze thaw cycles. "High Fired", or "Frost Free" pottery is what to look for.

Ceramic containers also require drainage holes in order to retain their integrity in freezing conditions. One or more holes is also desirable for the health of your plants when using them as planters. If your container does not already have a hole, you can drill one using either a masonry bit or a drill bit used for glass. We are happy to drill any pots purchased at our stores for $2.00/hole.

If you have a water garden or fountain using high fired containers, and you want to be on the safe side with your pots during freezing conditions, simply flip them over so that they will not fill with precipitation. The major concern here would be that in freezing water expands and may force the container apart.

Design Tip

If you have south facing exposure, repeating the same large pot with mature grasses or  Provence Lavender will add an elegant statement to your exterior design.

If you use Provence Lavender:

  • Give it a dome shaped haircut.
  • Take off approximately 1/3 of the plant in the fall.
  • It will love the heat of southern exposure.
  • Well drained to dry conditions are desirable, and easy to attain in containers.
